The Institution’s history dates back to 1874 when a group of Presbyterians from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, headed by the Reverend Doctor Charles Allen Stillman, presented an overture to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States asking the Church to establish a training school for Black male ministers. Authorized by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States in 1875, Stillman held its first classes in the Fall of 1876 and was chartered as a legal corporation by the State of Alabama in 1895.

Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Ala., is a state-related, independent institution of higher learning. Degrees are offered at the bachelor’s, master’s, professional and doctoral levels. The diverse student body is representative of 43 states and 23 foreign countries. Tuskegee was established in 1880 by act of the Alabama State Legislature. The school’s first president, Dr. Booker T. Washington, officially opened Tuskegee Normal on July 4, 1881.

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff is a state supported land grant institution. It was created in 1873 by an act of the Legislature as a branch of the Arkansas Industrial University (now the University of Arkansas).
Originally known as Branch Normal College, the school opened on September 27,1875, in a rented frame building on the corner of Sevier and Lindsey Streets in the city of Pine Bluff. With Professor J.C. Corbin in charge, seven students enrolled three from Jefferson County and four from Drew County.
